Classroom Economy

2nd Grade Money System:

An additional positive behavior incentive program that is utilized in 2nd grade is a money system. This system is designed to reward positive behavior as well as address mathematics and social studies state standards on a day to day basis.

We kick off the year learning concepts of economy in our Georgia Unit. We learn about the goods, services, wants, needs, and scarcity issues in Georgia and apply those understandings to our own classroom. The unit is cross curricular since we are using math concepts on a daily basis as well as social studies. Our study of economics is year long, as we maintain a class bank, class store, and class jobs.

At the beginning of the year, the class determines daily jobs that are necessary for students to do in the classroom.  They also vote on a daily salary for each job by ranking the jobs in order of importance and/or the amount of work required. Each child will have the opportunity to apply for a classroom job the third week of school.  Once the application has be received, each child will be assigned an interview time where they will meet with me to review their classroom job application.

Each student will be paid $100 of “Rocket Cash” at the start of the month in addition to $15 in “Rocket Cash” a week for performance of their classroom job. Students will receive additional “Rocket Cash” for good behavior.  For negative behavior students will be “fined” and required to give up a portion of their “Rocket Cash” to the Class Banker. These “fine” amounts will be determined by the class. Students will be allowed to spend their “Rocket Cash” in the classroom store every other Friday.

This classroom money system has been a wonderful way to apply real world skills in the elementary classroom. This system has been very successful over the years and the students really enjoy participating! If you would like to donate any items to the classroom store they would be greatly appreciated.
